There is no one word to describe what we are doing to our planet. So, let us all start by making one up: Gaiacide. Language is important. It is the reason why propaganda works so well. We need a way to describe the enormity of the conditions that human behavior is perpetuating. The Gaia hypothesis proposes that living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a synergistic and self-regulating, complex system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet. Gaia-cide, in turn, would imply the systematic and purposeful destruction of this system. There are many names that we have been using for a while now – global warming, climate change, environmental disasters, wildlife extinction and the list goes on. They all lead to the same story – we are killing our planet. Now is the time to acknowledge it.
